2nd DUI Charges & Penalties in Ventura County

Ventura County has earned a reputation as one of the toughest California counties when it comes to DUI enforcement and punishment. Throughout the County, drivers can face stiff penalties for even their first offense – including large fines and fees, community service, possible jail time, and a variety of other consequences. With each subsequent offense, these penalties can be greatly enhanced.

If you or someone you love has recently been arrested for a 2nd DUI in Ventura, there are a few things you should know:

  • Lookback period – Drivers can face elevated charges and penalties for a multiple DUI offense if they are arrested for DUI within 10 years of a previous DUI conviction.
  • Jail Time – In Ventura County and many other local jurisdictions, individuals charged with their 2nd DUI face a greater prospect of receiving jail sentences. In many cases, this is the most serious penalty and one that can threaten an individual’s freedom, profession, financial well-being, and future. Avoiding jail is commonly a priority when creating DUI defense strategies.
  • License penalties – Driver’s license penalties can increase with multiple DUI convictions. For example, suspensions can be longer, and the length and costs of DUI school can also increase. Additionally, drivers with two DUIs on their record can face significant auto insurance increases and may be required to have an ignition interlock device (IID) for a considerable amount of time.
  • Increased costs – Multiple DUI convictions nearly always mean increased costs, for fines and fees and other related matters – including DUI school, insurance, and community service.

Local law enforcement are committed to getting repeat DUI offenders off the road, and as a result enforce tough laws. At Lessem & Newstat, LLP, we know the stakes are elevated when clients come to us facing multiple DUI allegations.
